Premiere Samsung LSP9T projector review: 130 inches wow! -ecoustics.com

Hello, what are you looking for?

Samsung’s top-of-the-line UST projector is less than a foot away from the wall and can still display 130-inch 4K TV images.

We spend a lot of time watching movies, and based on the growth of certain home theater categories during the pandemic, it’s clear that consumers feel the same way. Box office numbers have certainly begun to show signs of rebelling against the growth of VOD, but as COVID cases rise again-it is only a matter of time before theater attendance is hit again. The demand for projectors has put a lot of pressure on manufacturers, and products such as the Samsung LSP9T projector are in great demand.

With a new product category called Ultra Short Throw Projectors (UST for short), setting up a projector and screen at home has never been easier. With technology that seems to violate the laws of physics, UST projectors can project images up to 130 inches from less than a foot from the screen.

The category has exploded this year, with almost all projector brands and some upstarts on Kickstarter offering products. Premiere of Samsung LSP9T projector

The Premiere of the Samsung LSP9T projector is the most expensive UST on the market at US$6,499. However, Samsung did produce a step-down model. The price of the LSP7T is about half of it. The appearance is almost the same, but it uses a different image processing engine and has a lower brightness (2200 vs. 2800 lumens).

The main difference is that LSP9T uses Tripe-Laser RGB light source instead of a single laser, which should translate into more vivid colors on LSP9T. In addition, LSP9T has a better built-in speaker system. What's more interesting is that the projectors have different projection distances. Although both can be placed a few inches from the screen, the location of the LSP9T is a few inches closer to the screen, and the optical components can achieve 130-inch and 120-inch images.

Whether it is Samsung or a competitor's UST model, it should be noted that there are inherent problems with the UST technology itself. Even the flagship LSP9T can't solve all these problems, but it can conceal them better than most people. Although many people will not notice, some scenes can be exposed with softer focus near the edge of the screen. The contrast is good, but it still lags behind LCOS or LCD projectors. In the end, UST projectors pursue convenience at the expense of picture quality. The best UST projectors currently cannot beat the best conventional (telephoto) home theater projectors at the same price point. Even so, the UST projector is still capable of producing incredible 4K images, which is hardly desirable for untrained eyes. Premiere LSP9T is undoubtedly a product that can provide amazing pictures. LSP7T was not tested in this review. set up

Setting up a premiere is almost like setting up a Samsung TV. Just plug it in and place it within one foot of the wall-mounted screen. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to your home Wi-Fi. Samsung’s Smart Things app is required and guide you through the entire process. Within a few minutes, the Smart TV interface will appear, which contains all the built-in applications. Now you are ready to start watching, but you may need to spend some time aligning and calibrating the pictures.

In order to obtain a perfect rectangular 16:9 projected image, the projector needs to be placed at the dead point and about one foot horizontal to the screen. Moving inches forward or backward will adjust the overall screen size. The keystone correction is handled by tilting the projector slightly forward using the screw-in/out feet under the projector. If the image is still not a perfect rectangle, please enter the on-screen menu settings. The menu settings provide approximately one inch of fine adjustment in either direction. After completion, there is another on-screen menu to adjust the focus if needed. Tizen Smart TV Menu Smart Projector

Premiere uses the same Tizen Smart TV interface as every Samsung TV, and we became very familiar when we reviewed The Frame. If you own a Samsung Smart TV, everything looks very familiar. Built-in all popular streaming media applications, including YouTube, Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max. All you have to do is log in with your credentials. Screen test

My long-term review allows testing of LSP9T in a variety of settings indoors and outdoors. Although it is not a weatherproof projector, it weighs about 25 pounds and can be carried outdoors for outdoor entertainment. Four different screen options were tested, including bare walls.

We strongly recommend the use of ALR screens for any UST, and you can find our recommendations here, which have been tested with nearly ten available UST projectors. Although our walls are not white, roughness and contrast issues make me yearn for a suitable screen. Bare wall test

Some brands advertise that their UST projectors can be used against a flat white wall. Although this is technically correct, this is not the correct way to use them. Unless your walls are completely flat and flawless-you will quickly notice any patterns. Outdoor test

I used two different outdoor screens for testing. The first is a cheap outdoor screen purchased on Amazon for around $80, and a 150-inch white screen from my neighbor.

Both of these screens are not suitable for daytime viewing, but both work well at night.

Watching 4K movies on a 130-inch outdoor screen at night is very spectacular. We tried to be larger than 130 inches, but realized that 130 inches is indeed the limit of the Samsung UST projector. Even on an ordinary white screen with some weather changes, the picture is bright enough to be appreciated by a large group of people. advertise. Scroll to continue reading. The 130-inch outdoor (high gain) screen looks great at night, but has a bottom glow.

However, the same high gain screen reveals what happens when the wrong type of screen is used with the UST projector. Since the projector is so close to the screen, the bottom center of the projected image becomes brighter. Interestingly, subsequent tests on low-gain screens corrected this problem.

This is why it is recommended to use a low gain screen on UST projectors. Gain simply refers to the amount of light reflected back to the observer.

The main difference between ordinary screens and UST projector screens is that laser TV screens have an ambient light suppression surface that uses corner reflections. The surface of the screen basically has a row of small ridges that reflect light from the projector below, while reflecting light from other sources away from the viewer.

This ambient light suppression feature allows projectors to work well even in well-lit rooms, and will only increase their value in the home.

If you watch an NFL game on Sunday afternoon, or your child wants to play video games with friends during the day (so far, not all UST projectors are the same when playing games), then the ALR screen is your different The second choice.

Ultra-short-throw movie screens usually also have lower screen gains. Screen gain is a measure of surface reflectivity. The higher the gain, the more light is reflected back to the observer. The lower the gain, the more light the screen absorbs.

You might think that a higher screen gain is needed on a laser TV screen, because this will give you a brighter image. In fact, the lower the gain, the better, because it further reduces the impact of ambient light on the screen. The 120-inch outdoor screen purchased on Amazon for $80 only works well at night. Cheap screen test

The next step is to test it on a 120-inch outdoor screen purchased on Amazon for $80. With low expectations, I assembled a fragile PVC frame and attached a wrinkled white fabric screen, unable to achieve a symmetrical fit. If you can get rid of wrinkles, this screen actually surprises me how good it looks at night. It is impossible to watch during the day, any wind will blow the waves into the photo, if it is not overturned. I think it's part of the fun of outdoor movies. 120 inch outdoor screen at night

Nevertheless, the translucent nature of the screen reveals a rear projection use case to make the premiere completely invisible. The projector also supports front or back ceiling installation. The settings in the menu invert or flip the image accordingly. Rear projection: Note that the projector is on the other side of the screen. Either way, wrinkles on the screen are visible. Outdoor theater

It is of course easy to use The Premiere to enjoy outdoor movies. With its built-in 40-watt speaker system, it's like having a soundbar, projector and smart TV all-in-one. No additional wires are required, although you may need an extension cord to connect to the nearest electrical outlet. Also, remember to make sure that your home Wi-Fi range can reach outdoors. Indoor screen test

With the cancellation of cheap screen testing, indoor testing on a dedicated ALR UST screen proved to be an eye-opening experience.

They have a huge impact on image quality, especially when viewed during the day. In the dark, the UST screen will provide better black level performance. Elite Screens Aeon CLR series screens

I tested it with Elite Screen Aeon CLR series 103 inches (about $1,200 on Amazon) in the living room, and I will introduce it in a separate review. Most of the tests are done on this screen, which is my reference point for additional analysis. Movie

Watching the show on our big screen is a kind of enjoyment. The Rock dominated the movie we watched from Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle to Jungle Cruise, and Squid Games took up too much of our TV time. Needless to say, no one in my family has anything to complain about.

As with any projector, the image quality will vary depending on the amount of light in the room. Unlike Star Wars, darkness always prevails. Since screens are critical to ultimate satisfaction, I will introduce more of my findings in the upcoming Elite Screens AEON CLR review. However, no matter what the screen is, I have noticed a few things. Color accuracy

Like all Samsung TVs, Premiere is preset to the "standard" color mode; this is usually to allow you to enjoy the vibrant presentation of natural videos in a bright showroom.

Switching to film mode or "filmmaker mode" will switch to a warmer, yellowish color temperature. This change is very obvious and will make it easier to watch a movie in the dark. However, when watching sports games during the day, I strangely prefer the "standard mode" because it provides more color pop and extra brightness. advertise. Scroll to continue reading.

However, neither of these two modes provide a calibration image, which is required for every projector setup. The correct color to the left of the Netflix logo is red. The right side of the projector is red.

Premiere can handle HDR content well, showing a lot of details and more accurate colors. However, non-HDR (or SDR) content is plagued by too bright red. Regardless of the screen, this is obvious, and I think I can correct it in the "expert" color settings adjustment.

Although, I quickly realized that this is not an easy thing to adjust. When I try to dial back the red obsession, I mess up another color. Therefore, I changed to switch between the preset color modes according to the content.

I know very well that the Premiere LSP9T projector does not have color accuracy out of the box and requires ISF calibration to get more satisfactory results. Elite Screens Aeon CLR series black level daytime black level

For any UST projector, getting true black is a problem, and the premiere is no exception. Turning off the lights is most helpful, and a specially made screen for watching movies can provide even more help.

Since the Elite Screens Aeon CLR series is optimized for viewing in ambient (daytime) light, I believe that the black level can be improved with a better screen for viewing in a dark theater. However, don't expect OLED TVs to provide jet black. You will see very dark shades of gray. Is it a deal breaker? Absolutely not. Your eyes will adapt, and only the most discerning video enthusiasts will ask questions. No glare

One of the main reasons I like watching TV and movies on The Premiere is that there is no glare. No matter how much you spend, all 4K and 8K TVs use reflective glass to absorb glare from open windows and lights. This is inevitable, although some TVs have special coatings to minimize it. With the premiere, there is no need to worry about glare. Zero reflection. Enjoy a real movie-like experience that looks good from any perspective. The speaker system is located behind the front cloth grille. Sound quality

Premiere’s built-in 40-watt speakers are both practical and convenient. It can be played loudly and even works so well outside that your neighbor may ask you to turn it off. Perhaps its best function is to keep the dialogue understandable. In terms of specifications, it is one of the best speakers built into the projector, although we think most buyers will still choose a separate home theater speaker system.

Strangely, Samsung has not yet provided a Dolby Atmos speaker system to seamlessly match the premiere. Of course, Samsung's soundbar can be connected via eARC HDMI, but users may encounter placement problems because the premiere is usually located on the console where the soundbar is located. This is the current challenge faced by all UST projectors, and we hope to solve these problems in the near future. Contest

Premiere LSP9T is currently your leader in combining image quality, convenience and ease of use. Although I did not personally test all UST projectors, the news on the street is that Hisense L9G is currently its closest competitor, but there are other restrictions. The Premiere of Samsung LSP9T provides an important place-a delightful large-screen movie experience that anyone can use and enjoy at home. With the current affordable flat-screen TV reaching 88 inches, The Premiere is the best choice for those looking for a larger screen viewing experience.
