The Amherst College emergency AC alert system malfunctioned on Friday afternoon and sent out emergency notices to multiple members of the Amherst College community.

“Please note there is no emergency,” Amherst College posted on its Twitter account. “Members of our community may have received an AC alert. Please be advised that this was a system malfunction. There is no event occurring.”

Amherst College uses the AS Alert system to notify students, faculty staff and visitors in the event of a significant emergency or dangerous situation, according to the college’s website. AC Alerts provides the Amherst college community with information that may be critical to their safety via text, voice, email, digital signage and outdoor speakers.

The AC alert notice was sent on the college’s move-in day for incoming first-year students.

A handful of Amherst College community members took to Twitter to inform the school that they are still receiving AC alerts.

“Happening again … please update,” Lori Hernandez commented on the Amherst College Twitter page.

The college assured community members that “there is no emergency” and additional AC alert notifications are the product of “a system malfunction.”
