An image of a group standing alongside U.S. Senate hopeful Dr. Mehmet Oz with one individual appearing to hold an “OZ” sign on its side so that it reads “NO” is doctored. The unaltered version shows the individual holding a sign that reads “OZ.”

A user who shared the image on Facebook and said: “Are you voting for Dr. Oz? No” (here).

One iteration of the image uploaded on Aug. 28, 2022, gathered more than 130,000 likes on Twitter (here).

Other examples of the altered image can be found (here), (here), (here) and (here).

The image is digitally altered, however, and the original was uploaded by Dr. Oz on Aug. 12, 2022, with a caption that reads: “From the dinner table to the Capitol Diner here in Harrisburg, Pennsylvanians are ready for new leadership. I’ll fight for PA small businesses in the U.S. Senate” (here).

The unaltered image shows the individual holding the poster correctly so that it reads “OZ.” Further text on the poster reads: “U.S. Senate” and “Paid for by Doctor Oz for Senate.”

Reuters has previously addressed digitally altered images of U.S. political figures (here), (here), (here).

Altered. The unaltered version of the photograph shows the individual holding a campaign poster that reads “OZ,” not “NO.”

(Correction August 30, 2022: Removed paragraph 7 linking to the tool FotoForensics due to the image upload being of too low quality for proper analysis)
