The development of digital signage (a display technology used to convey key information in an intuitive way) is remarkable. Nowadays, digital signage enriches our daily life with eye-catching content in various spaces (including squares, shopping malls, cafes, etc.).

By using digital signage as a media art platform, Samsung Electronics has been paving the way for expanding the role of this technology. Today, the company is the world's number one manufacturer of digital signage, developing products that support a wide range of consumer experiences around the world.

To celebrate Samsung's participation in InfoComm 2021-North America's largest audiovisual industry event, which will be held in Orlando, Florida from October 27th to 29th-let's take a look at the stories behind some of Samsung's most amazing digital signage.

In any case, the scale and growth rate of the global digital signage market are impressive. According to leading market research company Omdia, by 2023, the global signage market is expected to reach $19.9 billion. As of the first half of this year, Samsung ranked first with a market share of 33%¹. 1 Position in the LCD smart signage market.

In an era away from society, the digital signage market is growing rapidly. This is because digital signage is being used in all types of locations, from kiosks that provide integrated solutions for order and payment to drive-through services that allow customers to view menus and order food in the comfort of their cars. As people's lifestyles begin to change, companies are paying more and more attention to digital communications. Therefore, the role of digital signage has been extended to include various functions that complement this lifestyle change.

Whether it is depicting the huge waterfall in the center of New York's Times Square or the waves in the center of Seoul, Samsung's vivid and expandable outdoor signage can instantly change the atmosphere of any space.

Samsung SMART LED signs are installed on the side of the One Times Square building in Times Square, New York. The sign is about 110 meters high and has a total area of more than 1,081 square meters. It has a tight LED pixel pitch and a brightness of 9,000 nits. It vividly displays an artwork called "Waterfall-New York (2021)". Digital artwork depicts cold water pouring down from a huge waterfall.

The Samsung SMART LED sign covers an area of 1,620 square meters (four times the size of a basketball court) and is installed outside of COEX SM Town, Samseong-dong, Seoul. The sign makes full use of its unique L-shaped design to depict amazingly realistic three-dimensional waves. The installation is the result of a collaboration with Seoul design company d'strict, which also created "WAVE", which is an art work on display.

Just like the sign shown in the picture above, the huge LED screen of the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles attracts the audience with exciting visual effects. The stadium has always been a place full of exciting sights and sounds, and groups of people gather to cheer for their favorite team. Now, visitors to one of the top NFL stadiums can enjoy the unforgettable game experience brought by the Samsung signage.

The 360-degree double-sided curved LED screen suspended above the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California has a total area of 6,500 square meters, making it the largest screen in the world. This is also the first stadium monitor with 4K picture quality, providing fans with a vivid viewing experience anywhere in the stadium. Approximately 9,100 square meters of Samsung LED signs are installed around the roof and exit of the stadium.

Large outdoor signage attracts viewers in open spaces, while indoor signage can help increase personal excitement in a variety of environments, including when traveling.

Travelers from all over the world may experience that excitement when they encounter the S-shaped wall of Samsung SMART LED signs at Helsinki Airport in Finland. At the same time, the curved signs installed on the ceiling of the MSC Grandiosa cruise ship enhance the passenger experience through exquisite artwork.

Samsung’s curved LED sign is installed on the Galleria ceiling of the MSC Grandiosa, an area of 580 square meters. Since the sign can be operated at any time, it can provide passengers with various contents according to the time of day.

A total of 167 square meters of Samsung SMART LED signs were installed at Helsinki Airport in Finland. The S-shaped media wall uses 6000R curvature to emphasize the beauty of waves. Onlookers can admire various natural landscapes planned by the Finnish Tourism Board, including picturesque snow scenes and stunning northern lights.

It is important to choose a sign that fits the characteristics of a particular space. This is especially true for large complexes and resorts, including shopping malls and hotels, which tend to have multiple colors.

With its extensive product portfolio, Samsung provides customized indoor LED signage solutions for the Jeju Dream Tower in Jeju Island, South Korea. A huge circular media wall was installed in the lobby on the second floor of the tower, giving the impression that guests were taken to a whole new world. At the same time, the hotel rooms are also equipped with TVs and smart room solutions to help travelers relax and enhance the hotel’s quality experience.

It is very important for indoor signage to present information with consistent brightness and color. For semi-outdoor signs displayed in retail display windows and outdoor drive-thru lanes, the key is to clearly display information even in bright sunlight.

Last year, Samsung installed semi-outdoor signs in more than 1,300 drive-throughs for Tim Hortons, a popular Canadian coffee chain. The sign has IP56-certified durability, allowing it to withstand the changing weather conditions in Canada, as well as excellent visibility in bright light and an 85mm ultra-thin design. By the end of this year, Samsung plans to continue to expand Canada's largest semi-outdoor digital signage deployment by installing screens at 2,600 Tim Hortons drive-through locations.

In the United States, during the pandemic, drive-through sales at the Smoothie King franchise jumped from 70% to 90%. According to the company, part of the reason for this growth comes down to better business solutions through signage. The pandemic has reduced one-to-one interactions with customers, making effective drive-through menu boards critical to revenue.

Smoothie King needed a digital business solution that would allow restaurant managers to change menus and localize promotions without waiting for the franchise headquarters to contact. Samsung's semi-outdoor signage enables them to operate innovatively by combining updated indoor and outdoor digital signage with remote management capabilities. This paved the way for more sales, while demonstrating the versatility of the Samsung signage.

Samsung signs are also becoming a common sight in subway stations, where relay information such as arrival time and transfer gates are displayed. Samsung installed a total of 4,218 signage screens in 90 subway stations in Seoul, and replaced many analog maps with 49- and 65-inch touch screen displays.

The sign has IP5X-certified durability, can withstand use in crowded subway stations, and an anti-reflective coating that improves visibility. These displays quickly show subway passengers the information they need on high-resolution screens, allowing them to enjoy a smarter commuting experience.

Samsung plans to consolidate its position as the world's largest sign manufacturer by advancing innovative technologies such as virtual production solutions. The company will use its most advanced Micro LED The Wall to create an immersive, seemingly endless background for capturing content. Since The Wall is modular, it can be easily installed in various spaces. The virtual production studio solution will enable creators to connect LED displays to cameras to create rich and detailed virtual settings in real time.

Samsung recently announced a partnership with the world's leading digital art platform Niio.Art, which will provide companies with a new way to interact with consumers. This partnership transforms Samsung's signage into an immersive digital canvas, and the partnership will enable companies to use the best digital art to enhance their space.

Samsung self-service terminal is another future-oriented solution-in the era of contactless consumer interaction, it becomes more and more useful. This technology provides an integrated solution for navigating menus, selecting items and payment, and can be easily installed in restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, convenience stores and other places.
